The webinar analyses how the EU Green Deal is projected beyond its borders through two instruments: the EUDR, which establishes due diligence requirements with implications for third-country producers, and the EU–Mercosur Agreement, which incorporates sustainability matters within a trade framework. Panel I will focus on the EUDR as the intra-regional instrument of the EU Green Deal’s externalisation, including its due diligence obligations, risk-based approach, and broader implications for third countries seeking access to the EU market, particularly in the context of agricultural and forest commodity value chains. In parallel, Panel II will address the Agreement as an inter-regional expression of the EU Green Deal, focusing in particular on its legal architecture, including the Trade and Sustainable Development chapter, as well as its interaction with EU regulatory instruments such as the EUDR. The discussion will also consider current uncertainties surrounding ratification and implementation, and the extent to which the Agreement may enable or constrain third countries in engaging with EU sustainability-driven trade framework. The interaction between these instruments raises questions about regulatory coherence, the relationship between trade liberalisation and environmental issues, and the position of Mercosur countries in relation to the EU's policies.
