Climate catastrophes such as floods, hurricanes, and forest fires have become increasingly frequent and severe in recent years, causing economic losses and human suffering. Brazil, a country with a diverse climate and geography, has experienced its share of climate catastrophes, devastatingly affecting its population and economy.
Fundação Getulio Vargas, through the Institute of Innovation in Insurance and Reinsurance, will hold a webinar on 20 june 2023, from 10 am (Brasilia time) to initiate a discussion about the role of insurance and reinsurance in managing natural catastrophe risks associated with climate change in Brazil.
The event will bring together Dr. Franziska Arnold-Dwyer of Queen Mary University of London and experts in the field who will share their experiences and insights on how, and to what extent, insurance can provide financial protection against weather risks aggravated by climate change. Dr. Franziska Arnold-Dwyer will give a presentation on using cat bonds for shoring up climate resilience. The webinar seeks to identify potential research topics on ‘Climate Change and Insurance’ to be presented in collaboration between FGV IISR and the Queen Mary University of London.
This Webinar will address the following questions:
- What is the role of the insurance industry in addressing the climate emergency?
- What are the challenges and opportunities in providing insurance coverage for natural disasters?
- What is the importance of reinsurance and insurance-linked securities in managing risks resulting from climate catastrophes?
- How can insurance support risk management, risk adaptation and risk mitigation in relatio to climate change?
- How can we close and prevent insurance protection gaps in relation to climate risks?
